Hemp diapers

We're expecting a baby boy in June and we're looking at various options for cloth diapers. I've read that hemp and bamboo are awesome because they're really absorbent, but I've also heard that hemp cloth can be pretty scratchy. Has anyone else had experience with hemp cloth and have a different opinion? I would prefer not to put something uncomfortable on my baby's bottom.

hemp cloth

I have had a hemp shirt and it was very comfortable (depends on the manufacturer...some are made thin and cheaply and others thick and better quality). I love my hemp wallet and it is very soft.

check out this website for fair trade and hemp/organic cotton stuff : ) peace!!! mindy

Great site!

That looks exactly like what we're looking for. The pre-fitted diapers seem like a real time-saver (it's our first kid, so we'll see how it goes!) and they look pretty comfortable. I think we'll give some of those a try.

Bamboozles

We ended up ordering a couple Bamboozle bamboo diapers (bummis.com) to try out. We'll probably also order some hemp ones to compare and then get more of the kind we like. Hopefully we'll get them before junior gets here...

Hemp diaper tryout

We purchased some hemp diapers from Cricketts Diapers that seem to work very well. They are at least as absorbent as the bamboo ones, if not better. They do have a little bit of what's called the "hemp stinkies" when they're wet, but it's really not that bad. PeakEngineer Jr. seems to like them, too :)

Hemp vs. bamboo

We ended up liking the hemp better than the bamboo. The hemp seems to absorb more than the bamboo which we were looking for. We do like the bamboo because it is softer when dry, but once they get wet it doesn't really matter which one is softer! We just ordered 10 more from Crickets Diapers in the "toddler" size even though PeakEngineer Jr. is only 3 months! He is growing so fast!

vs. No Diapers at All

Remember Reduce-Reuse-Recycle? Well, with reduce in mind, here's an option for those with heartier constitutions.

I would have never thunk it, but is appears to be a quietly growing movement in the U.S. having local support groups nationwide. It seems well suited for environments with scarce resources. And at least one always-attentive parent (which babies deserve anyway).

no diapers

I haven't decided how I feel about the "diaper free" movement. I can understand it from a conservation perspective, but a lot of babies aren't on an exact schedule... I know the approximate times of day that PE JR. is going to go, but it is just a range. Also he tends to go to the bathroom while he is nursing, a little awkward without a diaper. I think we would end up doing the same amount of laundry washing my clothes as we would washing the diapers. I do however have a similar philosophy when it comes to potty training older children. I don't believe in pull-ups, I think they are just glorified diapers. When the child is ready, actually using the toilet not just sitting there you put them in underwear and don't go back to diapers! I could go on longer but I won't unless someone actually wants me to;)
