There is a lull in the moving craziness on the Florida end at the moment, so I was able to discipline myself enough to post. We still need to figure out where we're going to live in Ohio, and we'll likely be renting for a year or so up there, which could present some challenges in trying to continue our development of a sustainable homestead. For instance, we need to figure out a way to keep gardening if our landlord doesn't want us to alter the landscaping. We also need to sort out what sustainable solutions we could carry with us to a permanent homestead.
In Florida, we're enjoying the winter gardening season. I pickled 8 jars of hot peppers out of the garden for Christmas presents (and for our own use) and I'm waiting for tomatoes to fruit.

yummy and cold
The chocolate peppers are the best. They are like a sweet pepper but even better and sweeter:) It was 36 degrees out this morning when I woke up. It makes me wonder why we are moving out of Florida!!! Brr... I'm going to have some re-adjusting to do. You would think since I grew up in a state with 4 seasons I would be used to it. I think I've turned into a wimp in the 2 1/2 years we've been here! Ohh well... Ohio here we come:)
the adaptivity of the human body
Ahhhh . . . you'll get used to it. The microclimate we just moved to is significantly colder at night than the one we left -- only 8 miles away. I think we are probably a full USDA hardiness zone colder. But it is pretty amazing how fast the body adjusts to temperature extremes. While you are waiting for your body to adjust to the cold, just keep busy (keep your blood moving). Oh and maybe invest in wool. :)
Thought I'd mention
Today I posted a blog entry about starting vegetable seeds, which includes info on growing vegetables in containers -- you might consider that if you are renting. The best thing about container gardening is that you have more control over soil conditions, which often leads to healthier plants.
