Garden Pics

The garden is still going well, although temps in the 80's haven't been good for the lettuce or spinach. I think I've learned enough with my small garden now to attempt a garden on a larger scale for next year, perhaps with several varieties of veggies.

nice veggies

Your vegetables look great and I like the innovative use of wire racks. Is that kale and cilantro in the second pic? I've also started a small experimental garden this past fall. We've had such a range of temperatures (Northwest FL), I think my seedlings are a bit confused, though the lettuce has done well. I'll share some pics and more about my trial and errors when they get a little further out of the ground. I think next year I'll try a floating crop cover at night just to keep the beds a bit warmer.

thanks

That's kale and carrots in the second image. The carrots aren't doing great -- I pulled one out last week and it was just a pale nub. I suspect my soil is too poor for them right now as I haven't yet had enough mature compost to add.

I'm interested to see how your garden fares with us having similar growing conditions.

Off topic--read with an aggregator

Sorry this is off-topic--I looked for an email address but couldn't find one.

I do my blog reading via the RSS feed, and was disappointed when your feed stopped having the full entry. Maybe other readers like having concise entries and clicking through to see the full entries only for ones that interest them, but I much preferred it the other way.

So, consider this a vote for putting full entries on the main page. (Or, at least, in the RSS feed.)

apologies

I'm new to dealing with RSS, so I need to look at how to change that. I haven't decided yet which way to go with the main page -- maybe I'll take a poll to see how people prefer it.

FYI, my e-mail is peakoilengineer [at] gmail.com and you can also find it under Site Info menu.

It Seems Like Only A Few Weeks Ago...

...that you planted your garden. I can't believe how big everything is!

Oh, I know it!

Maybe I'm just still so new to gardening, but it sure seemed to explode quickly. Unfortunately the high temps we've had lately allowed the bugs to eat all my semi-developed cucumbers literally overnight, so here's hoping for a cold snap...

Bugs

The praying mantis is suppose to be the king of all all predaceous insects. They rarely if ever eat plants. The only problem is they eat just about any other insect, including the good ones. I believe you can order them online.

growing carrots

I have never had very good luck growing carrots. The first year that I tried them, I didn't get them thinned enough and they were about as wide as pencil lead. The year I had the best luck was the year that I thinned them so the plants were about two inches apart and I added sand to my soil so that it was easier for them to push through our clay soil. (We live in central Iowa.) I decided to use my gardening space for things that were easier to grow.

Sandy Soil

As you mentioned, I heard carrots love sandy soil.
