Freeze warning!

Bah! We're under a freeze warning tonight and probably tomorrow. I know, I know, I should stop complaining, but this is our growing season down here! I covered all the veggies and the orange tree with sheets and mulch -- hopefully that will be enough. Fortunately I haven't finished the new (larger) garden yet, so there's nothing I have to cover there...

You Think You Have It Bad

See what they're having to deal with in the Northeast.

:)

Aaaah!

Good lord, how could anybody say we have global warming?? :) It sounds very much like what I hear on Fox News...

How common is freezing where

How common is freezing where you live?

Not sure

I've only lived here for two years, and I remember just one good freeze last year. Incidentally, the freeze referenced above never panned out -- clouds rolled in and held the temps to 35 degrees. And of course today we have 80 degrees and killer tornadoes. Bizzarrro...

I hope you made it through

I hope you made it through the freeze without any losses. It is amazing what just a sheet can do, in terms of making a protective micro-climate.

About your global warming comment -- global warming causes large quantities of ice to melt into the oceans, which alters the salinity in various regions (poles get more dilute and tropics get more concentrated). That changes the prevailing water current patterns (where warm water migrates to N hemisphere and cool water flows back to the tropics), which in turn affects the weather. If the gulf stream shuts down or changes significantly, places like western Europe could actually freeze more. Ever hear of the little ice age? That was apparently the last time the water currents changed significantly. Here is a better explanation of the phenomenon: http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn8398

They've been predicting this for years, but most folks haven't heard of it yet.

Cloud Blanket

Oh, hey, no freeze then. Good deal!

Don't mistake my position! :)

That was just a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor on my part, jade. I am in no way, shape or form a global warming skeptic (as you'll see in my upcoming post). I'm glad you brought up the Atlantic Thermohaline Circulation -- global warming involves massive climate swings to both extremes, and that's something we need to make certain we address in our designs. The potential of the ATC shutdown has fascinated me for quite a while -- I even wrote a short story about it a couple years back (well, almost -- I still haven't finished it yet ;p )

"The Day After Tomorrow" movie was loosely based on the science regarding the effects of an ATC shutdown.

Forgive my Reactionarism

Sorry, was I caught being defensive of the global warming theory. :)

There seems to be a lot of focus on what will happen in the Atlantic, but less so in the Pacific.

Oh, hey, I just found this article about the impact on the Pacific and it says that GW has/will diminish the ever-reliable trade winds (used by sailors to travel West-bound) and it also said (emphasis mine), "Our only way to account for the observed changes is through the impact of human activity, and principally from greenhouse gases from fossil fuel burning."

Seamanship

When you where posting at blogspot you listed seamanship as one specialization required for new communities. I don't see that in the guilds.

I'm curious to see how you're going to incorporate climate swings into the design, as well as all of the other known affects of global warming.

Good one

That's a good one to add.

It seems the global warming predictions get wilder and worse every week --it's going to be tough to sort out the true requirements for our designs. But we'll make it happen...
